Today's Topic: Mutation and DNA Repair
Mutation is the source of new genetic variation, and is thus an important topic in the study of microbiology. Historically, the use of mutagens was the initial way that biologists began to study genes and gene expression. By inducing mutations, they could begin to see the effects on the organism. Yes, it was messy, but it provided valuable information that informs our current understanding of genomes and expression.
Your goal today is to review information regarding mutation and DNA repair. Here are some additional sources that you might find helpful.
Daily Challenge: Reflect upon what you have learned about mutation and DNA repair during your time in college. If you can remember, before you started college, what did you think a mutation was? What have you learned about mutation in previous classes. In reviewing this time, what have you learned as you looked over the material today?
